The federal government is planning to change parental allowance: fewer months will be paid out, but each parent is to spend more time at home.

Imagine your parents have a baby. Until now, they could receive up to 14 months of parental allowance together—that is, money from the state because they are not going to work. Now Family Minister Karin Prien has presented a plan: it is to be only 12 months from now on. But in return, each parent—that is, mom AND dad—must stay at home for at least three months. Previously, it was only two months per parent.

Why is the government doing this? It wants fathers to take more care of their children. In the coalition agreement between the Union and SPD, it says: „Wir entwickeln das Elterngeld weiter, indem wir mehr Anreize für mehr Partnerschaftlichkeit, insbesondere mehr Väterbeteiligung in alleiniger Verantwortung setzen." That means: dad is supposed to take on more responsibility, not just mom.
