The National Council has postponed an important decision about the future of nuclear power in Switzerland – and first wants clear answers from the Federal Council on financing.

In Bern, there was heated debate for three days. Almost 100 politicians spoke in the National Council about whether Switzerland should once again allow the construction of new nuclear power plants (NPPs). In the end, Parliament decided by 100 to 97 votes: first, the Federal Council must show how new reactors could be paid for before the discussion continues. Three votes made the difference.

Since the reactor catastrophe in Fukushima, a construction ban on NPPs has been in place in Switzerland. Now, part of Parliament wants to lift this ban because there could be a shortage of electricity in winter. The SVP and the FDP say: new reactors would secure supply. Energy Minister Albert Rösti supports this line and can imagine a so-called market premium – fixed prices that the federal government pays to NPP operators, even if electricity is cheaper on the market.
