After more than three months of war, the USA and Iran have agreed on a peace deal that is to be signed in Geneva on Friday.
After weeks of negotiations, the USA and Iran have reached an agreement that is intended to end the war. The whole thing is a so-called framework agreement — a rough deal that is to be officially signed on Friday in the city of Geneva in Switzerland. Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has welcomed the agreement and congratulated Donald Trump, the President of the USA. He called it a "diplomatischer Durchbruch" — a major success in diplomacy, meaning in negotiations between states.
For the agreement to truly work, Merz has set clear conditions. Iran must verifiably end its military nuclear program — that is, the building of atomic weapons. This means: experts should be able to verify that Iran really is not building atomic bombs. In addition, the Strait of Hormuz — an important shipping route for oil tankers between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula — must be completely open again. There must also be no further attacks on Israel or other neighboring countries.
